It’s really upsetting when someone who you believed truly loved you unintentionally makes it clear that you’re the last thing on their mind.

It was a wonderful Christmas morning! We got up early and opened presents! I got presents from the family i was spending Christmas with (Not my own, but i wished i was there too). Then it was just me wandering around a house that isn’t my own - alone. Then i was abandoned in a shopping mall i was unfamiliar with and was bumped into display tables by that certain person who held my hand and dragged me along the busy mall walkways.

If i was allowed to cry at home without being interrogated or told to stop immediately (or was at home in the first place), i’d just press my hands over my eyes and sob until i physically was unable to continue.

And for Santa,

Truly, all i wanted for Christmas was him.

Confessions, public art project, The Cosmopolitan, Las Vegas, Nevada by Candy Chang.

For one month, Chang lived in Vegas. Visitors could stop by, enter a booth, write whatever thoughts they wanted to share, and drop the confession into a box that mixed anonymously with other slips. Chang then took the anonymous slips and displayed them on the walls, painting selected responses in white against a larger red canvas background. According to Chang’s website, “This project seeks to create a cathartic sanctuary for this temporary community and help us see we are not alone in our quirks, experiences and struggles as we try to lead fulfilling lives.”

She looked at him warily for a moment until he held his hand out. A wide smile stretched across her face and she opened the door wide. Bouncing on her feet for a moment, she took his hand and then quickly moved forward to wrap her arms around him.

Without a word, she buried her face into his chest. Tobari held him as tightly as she could, trembling slightly with a mixture of excitement and being generally overwhelmed. “I’ve missed you too. So much.” She kept quiet for a few moments, simply clinging to him before looking up and instead moving so that her hands cupped ihs face.

Smiling wide, she gave a weak little laugh, tears welling in her eyes. “It’s really you, though. I mean, it’s really, really you.” While he’d been gone, she’d thought that she’d seen him around, but she hadn’t. It was disorienting at best, so now that he really was here, it was a bit of an overload.

Vergil watched in delight as the realization spread across her face. Yes, this was what he had been so longing for. He felt her hand on his before she invited herself into his embrace, which he accepted gladly, his arms wrapping tightly around her. He was thinner than he was when he had left, but not quite yet frighteningly so.

He gazed down upon her as she shifted her eyes to him and told him that she had missed him before gently cupping his cheeks. The blue devil was more than welcoming her touch, finding it comforting beyond anything that he would have had access to in the past several months.

“I am so delighted to gaze upon you once more.” he said with a gentle softness in his tired, crystalline blue eyes, which bore into her crimson ones as if they were hungry for her glance. Reaching up, he ran his fingers through her hair, as if to ensure her once more that he truly stood before her, in their warm embrace.

“Yes, it truly is me.” he reassured her, brushing away several strands of her red hair from her forehead before planting a gentle kiss upon the skin that hid behind them. “Do not fear me as a mirage, my dear.” After months away, he had re-developed his rather elegant, enunciated speech. “My love, i come bearing a gift for you.”

Slowly, he slipped his hand into his pocket and pulled out a tennis ball sized wrapping of cloth. He held it out for her to take. The wrapped object was smaller than the cloth suggested it to be of course, but he had not wanted to risk it getting damaged in any of his battles, so he had made sure it was well protected in all the layers. “Please, take this as an apology for my unintended, extended absence.”

The redhead was quiet, sorting through various books as she reorganized her bedroom. It was something she did every few months, just a general rearrangement of furniture and various other things. It never stayed the same way for very long. Also, it was a good way to distract herself. She’d been so bored lately, nothing had been very interesting at all.

However, she had to stop as she heard a tapping against her window. That was odd. Tobari’s window was on the second floor, and there wasn’t a way to get up there from the alleyway below. Cautiously, she moved to glance out the window, almost falling over with surprise when she saw who was standing below it.

She scrambled to open the window and leaned out, smiling wide. “Vergil!” Her voice was cheerful, excited, and she practically bounced. “Wait right there! I’ll go open the door for you, love!”

Quickly, she scurried down the stairs, going and quickly unlocking the back door through the storage room and peering outside to ensure that it was, indeed, him.

Vergil waited patiently, watching the window, staring expectantly. If she wasn’t there that night, he may just come back the next day and try than. Ah, but it seemed like it wasn’t necessary. As the window opened and a familiar - and also surprised - face peeked out at him, he returned a weary smile and a very slight wave.

“I shall wait,” he called up to her as she disappeared into her home. He looked down at himself for a moment, wondering if it would have been best to simply rush back to Dante’s shop first to get a cleaner set of clothes. As he reached up, his hand brushed the small amount of stubble he had dusting his chin and he frowned - perhaps he should have cleaned himself up a bit in general before he came. He probably smelled like sea salt and fire.

His was taken from his thoughts when the sound of the back door reached his ears, and he looked up at Tobari with a weak smile. He took several steps towards her, but not more, outstretching one hand out to her, as if to offer her a touch to prove he was, in fact, there with her now.

“I missed you, my love.” he said very quietly, voice like a whistling on the wind. It was soft and breathy, as if worn down by use and harsh air. “How truly happy i am to see you,” he added, his small smile growing just a bit, although is dull eyes gained a spark.

Vergil did nothing but watch in silent excitement as the docks in Brooklyn came into view. He was anxious, willing the ship to go faster. He had been an uninvited passenger, but no one had noticed so far, so he had not been bothered, simply left to his thoughts and the sound of crashing waves. It was just after sundown, the skies still painted with a battle of light and dark. Near the horizon was an angry of reds and oranges, clashing with the legion of black and blue, mixing to a violet in the fray.

It was a surprisingly beautiful night sky for above New York City, but he had been many on his long trip. It had clearly been several months, and it showed. He had a dusting of tiny, silver hairs on his chin and his hair now brushed his shoulderblades easily when it was down. His usual attire was splattered in faded dark brown splotches and blackish patches of mud. His features had signs of fatigue etched into them and his eyes were weary, with the dullness of a man who had seen his fill of bloodshed and tragedy.

As the ship pulled in, he stood tall and stared in the direction of a familiar shop. In the blink of an eye, he was on the docks, making his way towards the bustling streets of Brooklyn. The blue devil dragged his feet on the sidewalk, letting people bump into him at they pleased. He stared straight forward, face blank - His usual scowl absent from his face. Each time he blinked, he’d close his eyes for longer than a standard blink.

Turning a corner, there was a small flicker of glee in his blank eyes as he laid eyes upon the shop. Slowly, he made his way towards the alley which Tobari’s window looked out into. It was somewhat later, so it was likely the shop would be closed, and he had dropped his shop key in the Siberian tundra. He looked up at the window and lightly called before summoning an ethereal sword and raising it up, tapping the glass gently with the weakened blade before is dissolved.
